What we know about it
Upper Volta's first flag, adopted at independence, carried a stripe for each of the three major tributaries of the Volta River (the Black Volta, the White Volta and the Red Volta) and was virtually identical to the tricolor used by the German Empire from 1871 to 1918. On 4 August 1984 Upper Volta became Burkina Faso and the flag changed with it, after the coup of 1983 that brought Thomas Sankara to power. The red is said to symbolize the revolution, the green the abundance of agricultural and natural riches, and the star the guiding light of the revolution.
