What we know about it
In 1977 the local artist Kalontas Malon designed a flag of almost the same colours and symbolism which the Vanua'aku Pati adopted; when that party led the New Hebrides to independence in 1980, its colours became the basis for the national flag, and a parliamentary committee chose the final design from submissions by local artists. It was adopted on 18 February 1980, and Independence Day fell on 30 July. Green is the richness of the islands, red the blood which unites humanity, black the Melanesian ni-Vanuatu people; Prime Minister Father Walter Lini asked for the fimbriations that make the black stand out, and the Y-shape is the shape of the islands on the map and the light of the gospel.

Its day
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
