What we know about it
Paul Ahyi, a Togolese artist, studied art in France and left the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1959; he designed the flag the following year, and it was adopted on 27 April 1960, coinciding with Togo's proclamation of independence. The ratio is disputed: Whitney Smith stated approximately 3:5 and Alfred Znamierowski 2:3, and it has also been claimed that Ahyi followed the golden ratio, which would make it a golden rectangle. Its five stripes represent the five regions of Togo.
