What we know about it
A distinct coat of arms was accorded to Sint Maarten in November 1982, and in August of the following year a contest was held for a separate flag; on 13 June 1985 the government adopted the banner Roselle Richardson had designed. The Netherlands Antilles dissolved on 10 October 2010, and it became the only flag used in Sint Maarten, by then a constituent country of the Kingdom in its own right. The blue represents the sea and the sky, the red epitomises the blood of Sint Maarteners, and the shield carries the Constitutional Court in Philipsburg and the Dutch–French friendship monument that marks the boundary on the island.
