What we know about it
Senegal and French Sudan formed the Mali Federation on April 4, 1959, and its flag carried a kanaga on the centre band; when Senegal left the federation on August 20, 1960, it kept the colours and the stripes, replacing the kanaga with a green star. Historically the three colours are the three parties that merged into the Union Progressiste Sénégalaisé: green for the Bloc Démocratique Sénégalais, yellow for the Mouvement Populaire Sénégalais and red for the Parti Sénégalais d'Action Sociale.
