What we know about it

Montserrat was granted its own shield on 10 April 1909, and it went onto the Blue Ensign after the British Leeward Islands federation was dissolved on 1 July 1956; the Admiralty authorised it, and in 1960 it was adopted as a proxy national flag. A redesign came in 1999: the shield was increased in size, and the white disc removed and replaced with a white outline. The woman on the shield portrays Erin, the national personification of Ireland, and the Celtic harp in her grasp is another representation of it, both of them a tribute to the Irish settlers who came to the island from 1632 onwards.
