What we know about it
The current flag was adopted by decree in 2017 after a constitutional referendum in which 86% of voters were in favour of changing it; the design was not standardised until May 2020, when the government published graphic guidelines for national symbols. It is a derivative of the country's first flag, adopted on 1 April 1959 and identical but for the red bands. The star and crescent, and the green, are symbols of Islam; the red is the blood shed by Mauritanians who fought for independence from France.
