How it is put together

Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.

  • 3 vertical bands

The foot changes colour going along, the fly edge does not, and every change is a straight line top to bottom.

What we know about it

The country's first Constitution, published on 10 November 1958, brought the flag with it, and it takes its colours from the Rassemblement Démocratique Africain, which had derived them in turn from Ghana's flag. Kwame Nkrumah and Guinea's first President, Sékou Touré, were close associates. By Touré's account red carries the blood of anti-colonialist martyrs, the working classes' labour and the wish for progress; yellow is Guinean gold and the sun; green is the vegetation and the difficult life of the masses who live in the countryside, the three corresponding to the national motto, Travail, Justice, Solidarité.

Its day

The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.

Nearest in the world

Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.

Pan-African Colors

Flags people genuinely mix up. Worth a second look.
