How it is put together

Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.

  • 9 horizontal bands

The fly edge changes colour going down, the foot does not, and every change is a straight line right across.

    white ones · blue ones

  • a canton

A rectangle in the top corner by the pole that is not what the rest of the flag is, and that stops cleanly on both its sides.

What is on it

Each of these is what this flag's own Wikipedia article says is on it, the sentence is underneath, so you can see what it rests on.

  • sun

The canton is white, charged with the Sun of May, from which 16 rays extend, alternating between triangular and wavy.

What we know about it

The flag was first adopted by law on 18 December 1828, with 19 alternating stripes, and a new law reduced them to nine on 11 July 1830; Joaquín Suárez designed it. The nine stripes represent the nine original departments of Uruguay, on the model of the U.S. flag and its 13 original colonies. The Sun of May stands for the May Revolution of 1810 and is a figurative sun for Inti, sun god and mythological founder of the Incan Empire.

Drafted from Flag of Uruguay on Wikipedia, as it read on 2026-08-26, and checked back against it: every date, name and number above appears in the sentences it was written from. Nobody here wrote it by hand.

Its days

The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on 2 of them, with the sentence that says so.

Nearest in the world

Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
