Adopted at independence from the United Kingdom on 31 August 1962, it was designed by Carlisle Chang and chosen by the independence committee of that year. Fire is the red: the sun, representing courage; earth is the black, representing dedication; water is the white, representing purity and equality. The white stripes are each a thirtieth of the flag's length, the black one two fifteenths.
