What we know about it

After a nationwide design competition in early 1971 a redesign by the 15-year old schoolgirl Susan Karike was chosen, and the flag was adopted on 1 July 1971; before it, the Australian administration had proposed a vertical tricolour designed by Hal Holman, which had a mainly negative reception as a mechanically contrived outcome. Many Papua New Guinean tribes have long held red and black as traditional colours; the bird of paradise is a symbol of tribal culture, its soaring position represents the nation's emergence, and the Southern Cross signifies their relationship with other nearby countries in the southern hemisphere.
