How it is put together
Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.

Each of these is what this flag's own Wikipedia article says is on it, the sentence is underneath, so you can see what it rests on.
- star

What we know about it
The paramount chiefs Malietoa Tanumafili II and Tupua Tamasese Meaʻole designed it in 1948 with four stars, at a time when New Zealand had the stewardship of Samoa as the Territory of Western Samoa. In 1949 the smaller fifth star was added. Three Samoan flags came before it: Malietoa Laupepa introduced the first in 1873, his rival Tupua Tamasese Titimaea took it as his own standard with a different cross, and when Samoa became a League of Nations mandate in 1920 the territorial flag was a Blue Ensign carrying three palms on a sandy surface. No official symbolism is assigned, though Smith and the Samoan scholar Musuiaiga Neil Sitagata-Tapu report red as courage and blue as freedom.
