What we know about it
Andrianome Ranaivosoa, an agent of the Malagasy National Geographic Institute, designed it; a technical commission chose the design on 15 October 1958 and it was officially adopted on 21 October, a day and a week after the Malagasy Republic was proclaimed. The colours originally had no meaning: at the adoption Barinia Tsara, of the Bureau of the Constituent National Assembly, gave white as purity, red as sovereignty and green as hope. The president's office now gives red for national unity, green for hope, and white for freedom, security and cleanliness.
