What we know about it
Finland's independence from Russia in 1917 left many Ålanders fearing the loss of their Swedish cultural identity, and a movement for reunification with Sweden took the dispute to the League of Nations, whose decision favoured autonomy for the Ålanders under Finnish sovereignty. An unofficial blue and yellow tricolour was in use until the Finnish government banned it in 1935; legislation of 1952 granted the right to a flag of Åland's own, President Juho Kusti Paasikivi rejected a first proposal that resembled the Swedish flag with a blue cross, and the design adopted in 1954 put a red cross within the Nordic cross to represent Finland. It was first hoisted in Mariehamn on 3 April that year.
