What we know about it
Tokelau used the flag of New Zealand until it adopted one of its own: the General Fono approved the final versions of the national symbols in May 2008, approved the flag again in February 2009, Queen Elizabeth II approved it that August, and on 7 September 2009 the governor-general presented it to the Ulu as the country's first official flag. The design is based on the 2007 proposal, which was not officially adopted because the self-determination referendum of that year did not reach the required supermajority; the canoe stands for the country's journey towards finding the best governance structure for its people, the Southern Cross for a navigational aid on that journey.
