- #ce1126
- #339e35
- #000000
Other flags with red, green or black or all of red, green and black at once.
How it is put together
Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.
- 3 horizontal bands
The fly edge changes colour going down, the foot does not, and every change is a straight line right across.
What is on it
Each of these is what this flag's own Wikipedia article says is on it, the sentence is underneath, so you can see what it rests on.
- sun
A rising sun against a black field is also present in the coat of arms of Malawi and in the flag it officially represents the dawn of hope and freedom for the continent of Africa (when the flag was created, more countries in Africa were gaining independence from European rule).

What we know about it
Nyasaland became independent from British rule on 6 July 1964, renamed itself Malawi, and adopted this flag the same day. The rising sun is in the coat of arms as well, and officially it represents, on this flag, the dawn of hope and freedom for Africa. More countries in Africa were gaining independence from European rule when it was created. Black is the indigenous people of the continent, red the blood of their struggle and green nature. It resembles the Pan-African flag of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, which Marcus Garvey founded and led, with the red and black bands reversed and a sun at the top.
Drafted from Flag of Malawi on Wikipedia, as it read on 2026-08-26, and checked back against it: every date, name and number above appears in the sentences it was written from. Nobody here wrote it by hand.
Its day
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
