On 1 January 1981 the island group separated from the United Nations Trust Territory and Palau became a republic; its flag is a full moon slightly off-centered on a field of sky blue. The disk represents the moon instead of the sun, and Palauans consider the full moon the optimum time for human activity (celebrations, fishing, sowing, harvesting, tree-felling and the carving of traditional canoes) and a symbol of peace, love and tranquility. The light blue is the Pacific Ocean, and also the transition from foreign domination to self-government.
