What we know about it
The National Symbols Sub-Committee received 870 entries; six were short-listed, three were left (those of Theo Jankowski, Don Stevenson and Ortrud Clay, from Rehoboth, Windhoek and Lüderitz) and the three were combined into the flag the Constituent Assembly adopted unanimously on 2 February 1990. Two other claims were made afterwards: Frederick Brownell said he had designed it as South African State Herald, and Roy Allen that he had won a competition run by the Windhoek Observer. The sun's twelve rays stand for the twelve ethnicities of Namibia.
