What we know about it
The design is a negotiated one: a committee under Jomo Kenyatta was formed to avoid adopting a single party's flag, and the result integrated the tricolour structure associated with KANU, the white fimbriations associated with KADU, and a Maasai shield with crossed spears. It became the national flag on 12 December 1963, at Kenya's independence. Black represents the people, red the bloodshed during the fight for independence, green the land and white peace; the shield and spears symbolise the will to defend it.
