What we know about it
The flag was created on February 16, 1866 under Legislative Decree No. 7, in the presidency of José María Medina, on the model of the flag of the former United Provinces of Central America; the five stars stand for the five nations of that federation and the hope that they may form a union again. Legislative Decree No. 29 of January 18, 1949 established the turquoise blue colour, but the government flew turquoise only from the inauguration of president Xiomara Castro on 27 January 2022, and on 27 January 2026 the flag returned to navy blue.
