How it is put together
Nothing the measurement has a word for. It reads eight shapes off a picture: bands, a canton, a wedge at the pole, a disc. This flag is not any of them, so the space is left empty rather than filled with a description nobody took. The finder says what else it cannot see.
What is on it
Each of these is what this flag's own Wikipedia article says is on it, the sentence is underneath, so you can see what it rests on.
- bird
In the top right, the golden bosun bird (Phaethon lepturus fulvus, one of six subspecies of the white-tailed tropicbird) appears.

- globe or map
The last motif appears in the centre of the flag on a golden disc is the map of the island in green.

What we know about it
The Christmas Island Assembly announced a competition in 1986 to design both a flag and a coat of arms, with a prize fund of $100; some 69 entries were submitted, and the winner was Tony Couch, who lived in Sydney and had previously worked on Christmas Island. The Assembly announced the new flag on 14 April 1986, and the administrator Bill Taylor is said to have declared it official on 26 January 2002, though as of 2025 the Australian Government still describes it as used in the community, and not formally adopted. The disc behind the map was originally included to distinguish the green colour of the map, and has become linked to the mining industry.
Drafted from Flag of Christmas Island on Wikipedia, as it read on 2026-08-26, and checked back against it: every date, name and number above appears in the sentences it was written from. Nobody here wrote it by hand.
Its days
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on 2 of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
