What we know about it
The winning submission in the 1981 competition was the People's United Party's unofficial flag, with a red border on all four sides, changed to a border on just the top and bottom before adoption; it was made by two government officials, Everal Waight and Inez Sanchez, and is also known as the Flag of Unity. Alongside Malta's, it is one of two national flags to depict a human; the coat of arms is a memory of the logging industry that first brought British settlement, and carries the motto Sub Umbra Floreo, Under the Shade I Flourish. There were no standardised specifications until 2019.
