What we know about it
Omar Faiek Shennib is credited with the design, presented to the Libyan National Constitutional Convention and approved by King Idris Al Senussi; it flew from independence in 1951 until 1969. Between 1977 and 2011 Libya's flag was plain green, the only national flag in the world with one colour and no design, and this one was readopted by the National Transitional Council on 3 August 2011. Shennib's account gives red for the blood sacrificed for the freedom of Libya, black for the years of Italian occupation and green for agriculture.
Drafted from Flag of Libya on Wikipedia, as it read on 2026-08-26, and checked back against it: every date, name and number above appears in the sentences it was written from. Nobody here wrote it by hand.
Its day
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
