What we know about it
The Soviet-era flag stayed for seven months after independence was declared on 31 August 1991; this one replaced it on 3 March 1992, the day after Kyrgyzstan was admitted to the United Nations. The red is said to allude to the emblem hoisted by Manas, and the sun's 40 rays to the number of tribes he united. In late 2023 the Jogorku Kengesh straightened those rays, whose supposed similarity to a sunflower (in Kyrgyz culture a fickle and servile person) was the argument for it, and Sadyr Japarov signed the bill on 22 December.
