What we know about it
Brunei's flag was a solid yellow background until 1906, when the two diagonal white and black stripes were added as the country became a British protectorate; the red emblem followed the constitution proclaimed on 29 September 1959. The stripes stand for the wazirs who were once joint-regents: the Pengiran Bendahara in white, the Pengiran Pemancha in black. Yellow symbolises the monarchy, and red bravery and unity.
