What we know about it
The flag it replaced was adopted after the coup of Gitarama on 28 January 1961, and carried an R added that September; in 1999 the RPF government announced its intention to change it, arguing that it had become associated with the genocide, and critics read the move as an attempt to symbolically assert RPF rule. This one, designed by the artist and engineer Alphonse Kirimobenecyo, was adopted on 31 December 2001: the sun, with 24 rays, stands for national unity and transparency, and for the enlightenment of the Rwandan people.
