What we know about it
The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands flew a flag of six stars (designed by Gonzalo Santos, approved by the National Congress in 1965) for the districts of Yap, Truk, Pohnpei, Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands; the last three did not join the Federated States. A four-star variation was adopted on 30 November 1978, Kosrae having been split from Pohnpei; after the Compact of Free Association was entered with the United States on 3 November 1986, a darker blue was substituted for the shade taken from the United Nations flag. The stars represent the four federated states, arranged like the points of the compass, and the field is the Pacific Ocean.
