How it is put together
Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.
- 5 horizontal bands
The fly edge changes colour going down, the foot does not, and every change is a straight line right across.
What we know about it
Louis Thomasi, an accountant, made the winning design, and the flag first flew at midnight on 18 February 1965, the day of independence; among African flags it is one of the few that does not utilize the colours of the leading political party, its design having no political basis. Blue alludes to the Gambia River, the nation's key geographical feature, from which the country derives its name; red evokes the savanna and the sun, the thin white stripes are unity and peace, and the green symbolizes the forest and the agricultural goods. It was unchanged through the seven-year confederation with Senegal, from 1982 to 1989.

Its day
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
