How it is put together
Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.
- a single-coloured ground
The fly edge and the foot are one colour, and the same one, whatever else is drawn on top of it.
- a canton
A rectangle in the top corner by the pole that is not what the rest of the flag is, and that stops cleanly on both its sides.
What is on it
Each of these is what this flag's own Wikipedia article says is on it, the sentence is underneath, so you can see what it rests on.
- cross
It is a white shield with a red cross and a red chief (upper third of a shield).

What we know about it
Adopted on 10 October 1970, the flag has stayed as it was in the colonial period and unchanged since the republic was declared in 1987, though some politicians have called for changes; Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama announced a plan to change it in 2013, and it was abandoned in August 2016. The shield comes from the coat of arms granted by royal warrant in 1908: a British lion holds a cocoa pod at the top, and the quarters are sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove of peace and a bunch of bananas. Five other independent countries keep the Union Flag in their national flags (Australia, the Cook Islands, New Zealand, Niue and Tuvalu), and of these only Fiji is a republic.

Its day
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
