What we know about it
The design dates from 2001 and was adopted on 23 December of that year, keeping the crescent and four stars that had been in use in various forms since 1975. The four stripes are the four main islands: yellow for Mohéli, white for Mayotte (a French department the Comoros claims), red for Anjouan and blue for Grande Comore, and the four stars stand for the same islands. The star and crescent, and the green, are for Islam.
