How it is put together
Measured off the picture, the same way the colours were, not from anybody's description of it.
- a single-coloured ground
The fly edge and the foot are one colour, and the same one, whatever else is drawn on top of it.
- a canton
A rectangle in the top corner by the pole that is not what the rest of the flag is, and that stops cleanly on both its sides.
What is on it
Each of these is what this flag's own Wikipedia article says is on it, the sentence is underneath, so you can see what it rests on.
- crescent
The flag consists of a green field with a palm tree on a gold disc in the canton, a gold crescent moon in the centre of the flag and a gold Southern Cross in the fly.

What we know about it
The design came out of a flag designing competition in 2003; the winning submission was by the teenager Mohammed Minkom, and it was formally declared on 6 April 2004 by Evan Williams, then Administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories, though the design is not officially recognised by the Australian Government. The palm tree represents the islands' tropical flora, the crescent the Cocos Malays and Islam, and the Southern Cross Australia and the Southern Hemisphere; the colours are Australia's national colours.
Drafted from Flag of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on Wikipedia, as it read on 2026-08-26, and checked back against it: every date, name and number above appears in the sentences it was written from. Nobody here wrote it by hand.
Its day
The almanac keeps a page per day of the year that something is dated to. This flag is on one of them, with the sentence that says so.
Nearest in the world
Every flag is compared with every other one, off the pictures themselves. Two copies of one picture score 0; these are the closest to this one. How that is measured.
