The civilian variant without the coat of arms was created in 1866, and through the 19th and 20th centuries variant designs carried a variety of arms and occasionally switched the stripes from vertical to horizontal; 1993 brought a standardized design, after Andorra joined the United Nations. The centre bar is slightly wider than the other two: the ratio of bar widths is 8:9:8.
