The oldest attested standard of the republic dates from 4 September 1465, commissioned from a manufacturer in Florence. A white and blue cockade, identical to the one used by the French revolutionaries, was commissioned by the Supreme Council in 1797, most likely under the influence of the wave of reforms in France. A decree standardized the coat of arms on 6 April 1862 without mentioning the flag; the two colours represent peace and liberty.
