Das älteste belegte Banner der Republik stammt vom 4. September 1465, in Auftrag gegeben bei einem Hersteller in Florenz. Eine weiß-blaue Kokarde, die derjenigen der französischen Revolutionäre gleicht, gab der Große Rat 1797 in Auftrag, sehr wahrscheinlich unter dem Eindruck der Welle von Reformen in Frankreich. Ein Dekret legte das Wappen am 6. April 1862 fest, ohne die Flagge zu erwähnen; die beiden Farben stehen für Frieden und Freiheit.
