The state flag of the soon to be independent Vatican City was to be the merchant flag of 1825–1870, papal authorities decided after the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929; the treaty came into effect on 7 June that year. That merchant flag replaced a white one on 17 September 1825, which took its colours from the materials of the two keys, gold and silver, and was the first bicolour used by the Papal States. Along with Switzerland's, it is one of only two national flags at a 1:1 aspect ratio.
