Elaine Liverpool's flag of 1979 carried the coat of arms on a breadfruit leaf, which proved convoluted and costly to manufacture and hard to recognise from afar; after the 1984 elections the new prime minister James Fitz-Allen Mitchell sought a redesign, a nationwide contest ended in an impasse, and Julien van der Wal (a graphic artist from Switzerland) was asked to modernise the flag while keeping the same colours and respecting the symbolism. His version, formally adopted on 12 October 1985, puts three diamonds in a V where the arms had been: an allusion to the first letter of Vincent, and to the nicknames Gems of the Antilles and Jewels of the Caribbean.
