Adopted on 18 November 1977, eight months before independence, it replaced the British Blue Ensign defaced with the arms of the protectorate. The five stars, in three offset rows in the shape of the letter X, were meant at first for the five provinces of the country at independence (Central, Western, Eastern, Malaita and Honiara Capital) and the number of stars has stayed as it was even though new provinces have since been created. Blue evokes the water, in rivers, rain and the Pacific Ocean; green alludes to the land and what grows on it; yellow epitomises the sun and its rays separating land and ocean.
