The flag is an armorial banner: its design is the shield of the coat of arms, from the badge Sir Arthur Grimble designed in 1931 for the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, granted in 1937. A competition was held in the run-up to independence, and the College of Arms wanted the frigatebird and the sun enlarged and the waves narrowed; the locals insisted on the original design, and the flag was hoisted during the independence day celebrations in Tarawa on 12 July 1979. Its sun has 17 rays, for the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba, and the wavy stripes the ocean and the three archipelagoes.
