It is an elongated banner of arms; Queen Isabella I of Castile granted the arms themselves to Gibraltar, by Royal Warrant, on 10 July 1502, and it was regularised in 1982. Among the British Overseas Territories it is unique: no other has a flag without the Union Jack in some form, although the Union Jack is widely flown as a standalone flag within the colony. No castle in Gibraltar resembles the one on it, which is supposed to represent the fortress; the key is said to symbolise its significance, the Moors and Spanish having seen Gibraltar as the key to Spain, and the British later as the key to the Mediterranean.
