Juan Pablo Duarte designed it, and it first flew on February 28, 1844, the day after the Dominican War of Independence began. The first of them were made by María Trinidad Sánchez, Isabel Sosa, Concepción Bona and María de Jesús Pina. The colours are read as liberty, salvation and the blood of heroes. After the annexation to Spain from 1861 to 1865 the flag came back with the quarters on its fly side flipped, and the coat of arms at the intersection of the cross.
